Week of February 27th - Dr. Seuss Week

This week we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss Week!

Monday = "The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins" - wear any kind of hat
Tuesday = "Fox and Sox" - wear crazy socks
Wednesday = "If I Ran the Zoo" - wear animal print
Thursday = "The Sleep Book" - wear comfy sweats
Friday = "Hooray for Diffendoofer Day" - wear Arrowhead spirit gear (or blue and white)

If you have a favorite Dr. Seuss book at home, please feel free to send it in for us to enjoy this week. Your child may even get a "bonus." ;)

Also, on Wednesday we get to go to the Alberta Bair. Please make sure you have returned the permission slip that came home in your child's Tuesday folder.

Everyone needs a Marissa in their life. She always lifts me up and makes my day brighter. One day this week she made and wore a heart that said, "Mrs. Peterson is the best teacher ever." #heartmelter

Jackson the super-duper cleaner!

These five got over 100 puzzles on ST Math this week! Way to go, guys! (And sorry about chopping your head off, Sam!)

I love listening to the kids sing the same songs/rhymes I did as a kid while they jump robe. "Cinderella dressed in yella..." :)  Brings back lots of memories!

Look at the cool derby race car Ellecia made for Awana. Good luck at the race!

My hilarious Cheeto-sneaker ;)

I was so impressed with the lever Thomas made with the Vex IQ kits!

Nathaniel found a great text-to-text connection on one of his Raz Kids stories that tied to what we just read/learned about overfishing. Great connection, Nathaniel!

This week in reading  (Unit 4, Week 3) we will be answering the essential question: How do anima;s adapt to challenges in their habitats? We will read the expository texts: "Amazing Wildlife of the Mojave" and "Gray Wolf! Red Fox!" We will also read the folktale "Little Half Chick." We will focus on the skills of rereading, comparing and contrasting, main/helping verbs, and using quotation marks in dialogue.

Our vocabulary words this week are...

In math, we will take our Chapter 9 assessment toward the beginning of the week. This will assess to see if students have mastered comparing fractions, ordering fractions, and finding equivalent fractions. Then we will dive into Chapter 10: Time, Length, Liquid Volume, and Mass. Even as we explore new concepts, though, it is important that we continue to work on recalling our addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts quickly. Practice makes perfect!

As always, thanks for all your support and help at home. You are raising wonderful human beings and I feel blessed to be on part of their journey!

Lastly, 2016-17 Memory Book order forms have gone home and are due March 7th.   You can order online at ybpay.lifetouch.com ID # 6643317

Week of February 20th

Avery brought in her cute puppy, Murphy, for a visit. He is soooooooo cute. And look at Tyton's face in those pictures - he was one happy guy!

I loved Eden's snack on Tuesday - she was eating cherry tomatoes with chopsticks. Too cute and clever!

It was fun to hear about Laurel's recent to trip to California. I just love that girl (and hearing about her fun adventures!). She simply is my favorite Canadian :)

I love the sweet reunions between these two brothers at recesses. Aren't they too cute for words?!

Dylan aka Pippi

Ellecia's dimples and best quality handwriting are two of my very favorite things.

These ten brave souls willingly shared their "conversation heart" writing pieces at Author's Chair. Thanks for the entertainment guys!

Amy just got back from Costa Rica and had some cool souvenirs to share with us. So jealous!

This week in reading we will be on Unit 4, Week 2, which will focus on the essential question: How can you use what you know to help others? We will be reading the Realistic Fiction stories "The Talented Clemintine"  and "The Impossible Pet Show." We will work on the skills of asking and answering questions, point of view, contractions with not, and using apostrophes. Our vocabulary words this week are all plural words. This week's vocabulary words are:

In math, we will continue to work in Chapter 9: Comparing Fractions. This week we will dive deeper into equivalent fractions. Remember, your child should be working on recalling their addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts fluently. Please encourage your child to work on flash cards or Xtra Math for a few minutes each night. It really does make a difference. I tell the students often: my job it to prepare them for fourth grade. :)

Remember that Tuesday (the 21st) is class picture day. If you don't want your child to take an individual picture on Tuesday, you MUST return that blue slip indicating that you are opting out of individual pictures. Thanks!

Also, Friday is a Spirit Day: Flannel Friday.  Please encourage your child to participate: it is always fun to have them coordinating :)

Lastly, I am growing discouraged with the number of students who are not returning their reading logs. I don't think reading for 15-20 minutes a night is asking too much. I really, truly am trying to prepare them for 4th and 5th grade, when they will be expected to return homework to school on a regular basis. Please encourage your child to be responsible and return their log every week. Thanks!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! Enjoy the beautiful weather!
