Week of November 23rd / Happy Thanksgiving!

(Look at all that we have to be thankful for! The kiddos did a terrific job brainstorming all the things that being us happiness - from BBQ chips to books! :)

Happy birthday to two very special girls, Grace and Maggie! Thanks for the yummy treats! We are so lucky to have you in our class! :)

I hope everyone has a wonderful, relaxing Thanksgiving spent with the ones they love most. Thanksgiving is always a tough day for me, as my mom passed away on Thanksgiving day ten years ago. However, I try not to dwell on the sadness, instead I focus on my family, friends, and students that I love SO, SO much! Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with me - they truly bring me so much joy!

This week we will do a few fun reading, writing, and art projects relating to Thanksgiving. No spelling words, as we only have a one and half day week.  See you on Monday, November 30th!

Week of November16th

Another week is in the books! We started the week with a music performance by the 4th and 5th graders that honored our veterans. It was cool to see the gym packed in red, white, and blue for Veteran's Day!

I loved Carson's shirt that said "Go Your Own Direction."
The weather is getting colder and we had to break out our winter gear this week :(

Madeline's dad, Steffan, is an archeologist for Yellowstone National Park. He came and talked with us about studying how humans lived long ago and brought along some cool artifacts, too.

In reading this week, we will be focusing on the vocabulary words tourist, village, and trade. We will finish reading Living on the Land in our Theme Readers. We will continue doing research for our Inquiry Projects, which are focusing on specific questions for coastal, mountain, plains, and desert communities. In writing, we will finish our procedural text and write a friendly letter!

In math, we will continue working in Chapter 4. Students will be making flash cards for each of the multiples we learn, so please encourage them to work on these a few minutes each at night at home. We have worked on multiples of 0, 1, 2, 4, 5, and 10 so far! The more they practice, the better they will do. As I told them, you become better at multiplying by... practicing multiplying! :) Funny how that works!

Have a great weekend!

Week of November 9th

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend! Next week, we are back to FULL days of school. (I think I just heard the students collectively *sighing*! lol). :)

My heart is feeling absolutely full after conferences (I am exhausted, but my heart truly is filled to the brim). I had 100% turnout (which is a first for me!) and I was so delighted to talk to each of you about your child. The love, support, and encouragement you show your child is a teacher's dream come true. I leave every night with the peace of mind that these kiddos go home to loving parents that value education. And I am very aware that is not the reality in many places. What blessed kids! And I hope you feel assured that everyday your child comes to school to a teacher who loves them dearly and is invested in their education and in them as individuals. I really, really love this group of kids!!! Okay, enough gushing, moving on....

In reading, we will begin Unit 3 in Lead 21 which focuses on the "Shape of Land." Our theme vocabulary words will be geography, community, and business. We will read Chapters 1 and 2 in our Theme Readers called Living on the Land. In language, we will continue to work with figurative language, prefixes, and subject/predicates. In spelling, Unit 10 will deal with words that have the same vowel sound as "clown." In writing, we will begin writing a procedural text that teaches the reader how to do something.

In math, we will wrap up Chapter 3 and take our assessment, which focuses on figuring out multiplication by drawing equal groups, arrays, and using repeated addition. In Chapter 4, we will apply those strategies and start really working on learning our multiplication facts. Please spend a few moments each night practicing the facts we are working on (with start with multiplying 0, 1, 2, 4, 5, and 10). Even a few minutes a night will help out a ton in the long run!

In social studies we will tie in what we are learning in Lead 21 to our own community/state of Montana. In science, we will continue talking about the four forces of flight and balanced/unbalanced forces.

Well, that's all for now. As always, if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks so much for all the support! :)

Supaman Assembly

We had an awesome time watching some "fancy dancing" today and hearing a positive message about being drug and alcohol free. Ask your child what their favorite part of Supaman's presentation was! :) One highlight for me was watching Owen, Tavie, and Brennen dance up in front of the school. So fun!
