What's on the agenda?

Sorry about not posting on Friday. My computer was being funny and I had to call in for help. The students have their Chapter 4 History Test Monday, December 16. We practiced the online tutorial and hopefully they used a portion of their weekend to review. They have a test in Math Tuesday, December 17. What's New?

This week we had Drops in the Bucket as our extended math assignment. This is due Thursday. On Friday I will be handing out our new Accelerated Math assignment that will be due the following Thursday. As always we are working on Mountain Math and Mountain Language. I have tried to incorporate those assignments into either a warm up activity or a rotation. I hope this allows everyone to be more successful. Apologize for not being as prompt this week with our Spelling List. Next week will be better. Feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns.

There is a history test on Friday that covers Chapter 3: Native American Cultural Regions. I will have the students explore the tutorial today in class but they do have access to it at home. Please click on the link to practice.

Day 2 in Mrs. Peterson's Class

I wanted to be sure and communicate the homework that was assigned today and upcoming events. Today, Tuesday, October 8th: In reading there was a Theme Vocabulary worksheet further exploring; analyze, navigate, deliver. In language we worked with summarizing by reading through a chosen selection and utilizing the skill. Our spelling for today was working with basic words and synonyms. Bella was a huge help in understanding the directions. High Five, Bella! Math we worked with the concept of dividing by multiples of 10. Our math block was broken up into two sections so some of your students may have a few questions. We'll definitely take another look at it. Science was with Mr. Marquis and they did a Planet Scavenger Hunt, which sounds fun. Music is tomorrow and a reminder about Walk or Ride your bike to school Day as well as Box Tops collections. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, I'll be checking the blog at the end of the school day and I have an email. You can direct your questions to: KeltnerA@billingsschools.org. I am normally in the class before the start of school so please call if you need.

Happy Birthday wishes go to Taylor. Hope your birthday is amazing.

I think introductions are due.

Hi All,

Your students and I survived our first day together in Mrs. Peterson's absence but we are ecstatic for her to have her baby. I will try to post to Mrs. Peterson's blog daily so that you are able to track student assignments and upcoming events. Mrs. Peterson was able to post this week's spelling words so we are ahead of the curve. Today we started a new unit in our Lead 21 series called Seeking the Unknown and read pages 71 to 79 in our theme readers. In addition, we introduced our theme vocabulary words: analyze, navigate, and deliver. Today was our spelling pretest for Unit 7 and we will be studying -r controlled vowels. "Her Nurse Works Early," is one of my favorite ways to demonstrate the principal that will be beginning to explore. In math we started dividing larger dividends in chapter 3 section 8 and a worksheet was assigned. Whatever was not completed in class was assigned as homework. Lastly, we continued our study of Native Americans in Social Studies. We explored the Migration Theory and documented our understanding through a summary activity in our Social Studies workbooks. This week and the following weeks we will be examining the idea of a persuasive essay in writing. If you have any questions, comments or concern, please feel free to reach me through email or here at the school.

As always, remember Mountain Math and Mountain Language. Drops in a Bucket were distributed today and will be collected on Thursday.

Miss Amber Keltner!

As of Monday, October 7th, Miss Keltner will be my Guest Teacher while I am away on maternity leave. Miss K is a very familiar face to most students, as she completed her student teaching at Arrowhead last Fall and did quite a bit of subbing in the building last school year. I am so glad to have such an enthusiastic, kind, and passionate Guest Teacher taking over while I am away. The students are in such great hands!

If you have any questions, concerns, or need to get a hold of Miss Keltner, you can reach her at (406) 281-6393 OR by sending her an email at keltnera@billingsschools.org

Open House Highlights

Thank you to those of you who took time out of your very busy schedules to come to Open House. Only half of my students had a parent(s) that was able to attend Open House. I was kind of disappointed, to be honest, since I will be going on maternity leave in just a couple of weeks and that was probably the only chance I will have had to meet with some of you. If you were not able to attend Open House, I will be sending home some important information in your child's Tuesday folder. As always, please call or email if you have any questions or concerns.

Here are some highlights and reminders that I discussed:

        * Please make sure you are reviewing and signing your child’s planner every night!

        * Your child should be arriving at school with a FULL water bottle each morning (we do not have a sink/drink fountain in our room).

        * Check PowerSchool often! This is a valuable way for you to see your child’s grades, late assignments, missing assignments, etc. (If you were not at Open House, this information will be coming home in your child's Tuesday folder).

         * Please check your child’s Tuesday folder. Important information and their graded assignments will be handed back in thier folders every Tuesday. Please make sure they are correcting their papers that say "Correct and Return."

        * My last day of school will be Friday, October 4th. Your child's guest teacher will be Miss Amber Keltner. I will be returning after Christmas break.

My Cup Runneth Over

Wow! Blessed! Amazed! Surprised! Speechless! These are just some of the words floating through my head after that incredible surprise wedding shower yesterday. I am truly in awe of your generosity. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Kitchen Aid Mixer (something I have been dreaming of for years now), the basket FULL of kitchen gadgets and goodies, the adorable CrockPot, and the gift card to Jake's. Words really cannot even begin to express how grateful I am for the kindness you all showed. Thank you, thank you, thank you. These last two years with your children have been a blessing and I will miss them all greatly next year.

Mrs. Peterson

As most of you have probably heard, Nick and I got married this past Saturday. We had a small ceremony with close family and I couldn't be happier. Thank you all for your kind words and well wishes. I feel so blessed to have such encouraging people in my life. P.S. Although I am now legally Mrs. Peterson, the students have decided that it is probably just easier to finish the year calling me Ms. Michel. So, I won't start going by my new name until next school year :)

I Have a Dream....

Here is the part of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech that each student should be working on memorizing! We will present our speeches in class next Friday (January 25th). I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.

Half Way!

Can you believe we are half way through the school year?!? Time sure does fly when having fun. :) Second quarter report cards are coming home today. Please sign and return the report card envelope as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's report card, please don't hesitate to let me know. After a year and a half together, the students are all getting very "comfortable." I love watching the kids interact and collaborate with one another. However, if you could please remind your child to finish the year strong by: listening to the speaker, focusing on their work (not the person next to them), and remembering to turn their assignments in on time (especially their math and reading logs). Thanks so much for all your support at home. This is a truly marvelous group of students, who I feel blessed to teach. After two years together, they will forever hold an extra special place in my heart! :)
