Week of February 16th

Remember, no school tomorrow (the 12th) or on Monday (the 15th)... Enjoy the four day break. I am going to enjoy this "winter break" by enjoying the SPRING weather with my boys!

In reading next week, we will continue on with Unit 5: Heroes Across Time.  Our theme vocabulary words are: provide, disturb, and approach. We will work on the skills of monitoring comprehension, retelling and recalling information from a story, prefixes, and cause and effect (we are still struggling with that one!). In spelling, all of our words will be contractions. We will continue to research our heroes. Students will continue to gather information on their hero, focusing on WHY/HOW they changed the world. For the wax museum, students will make a poster with facts, pictures, and a timeline.

In math, we will review Chapter 7 and then take our assessment. Students are doing a great job of using their strategies to solve problems. It is the two step problems that are still troubling most students. An example might be: "Johnny made 5 waffles for breakfast. He has 25 strawberries and 15 blueberries to put on top of the waffles. He will put an equal number of berries on each waffle. How many berries will Johnny put on each waffle?" So, first the students need to add the berries together (25+15=40). THEN, they would divide them by 5. (40/5=8 berries per waffle). Anyways, we will continue to work on these multistep problems, as we will surely encounter them on our SmarterBalance tests. In the next chapter (8), students will begin learning about understanding and using fractions.

In science, we will continue to learn about simple machines (lever, pulley, wheel and axle, screw, inclined plane, and wedge. Remember, we will be going up to the airport on the 23rd as a part of the Forces of Flight part of PLTW this year. Please send in those permission slips ASAP! I am still missing over half of them :(

I hope everyone has a terrific long weekend!
